April 16 John reports: The drive south from Austin out to Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has numerous stands of native Texas wildflowers visible from the road. The Wildflower Center is past its early blue bonnet prime, but is well worth a visit for the second wave of flowers and the educational displays, plus the extraordinary demonstration garden.
Top priority is the drive west and north from Austin to Johnson City. Highway 290 west bound has occasional bunches of flowers. The main event is heading north on Highway 281 / 290, for just under ten miles, approaching Johnson City.
Stop safely along the road in either direction to explore the rocky roadsides punctuated with brilliant bursts of color and variety. We encountered over 20 varieties of wildflowers in random locations.
Cross carefully into the wide median strip between the northbound and southbound lanes of fast moving traffic. You will experience Texas late spring wildflower heaven, thanks to seeding by the state and ample rainfall. Immerse yourselves in miles of flowers of many different types, all currently in full bloom. Watch for snakes!
Have your camera loaded with battery power and card storage, plus water, hat, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes. Bring a Texas wildflower guide, or luxuriate in the profusion.
From Johnson City you can turn left onto S. Avenue F and wind your way along Miller Creek Loop back to the highway junction.

Mar 25, 2012 Stewart reports: These two shots were taken in the town of Fort Davis Texas today (3-25-2012). it is one large Claret Cup and the only cactus that I have seen in bloom. I went all the way to Big Bend National Park and found no other cactus in bloom, but they are all getting close. will post more photos as soon as I make the trip again.

Mar 25, 2012 Stanley reports: The east side of the Franklins Mountains above NE EP have turn deep golden. Here is a link to the story.
Jan 23, 2012 Big Bend reports: Due to continuing drought conditions, everyone is asked to voluntarily conserve water. High clearance, four-wheel drive equipped vehicles are required on the Dagger Flats, Black Gap, and River Roads. Some rain in the forecast for the Jan 24.

When you turn on that function, you allow your camera to get closer to the subject, looking into a flower for example. Or getting up close and personal with a bug. More on desert photography.
